SELFOCO – 2D steerable self-focusing coupler for adaptive fiber-to-chip contactless connection

Here we develop a fully integrated on-chip coupler enabling efficient optical communication between an optical fiber and a standard SiPh chip that adapts to positional deviations from vibrations or thermal drifts without using external lenses or bulk components, thus reducing the overall price of the system.

This project focuses on developing a new silicon photonics optical phased arrays (OPA) with steerable radiating elements (SREs) to improve efficiency, reduce power consumption, and correct wavefront distortion in wireless optical transceivers. It involves theoretical modeling, design, fabrication, and experimental testing of the system.

This project aims to develop silicon photonic sensors that interact with the environment at centimeter-scale distances without the need for bulk optics. By creating advanced grating couplers that radiate beams with waists larger than 100 micrometers, we will demonstrate a lens-less on-chip vibrometer for precise, large-scale applications.
