  Alcatel Thales III-V Lab is an industrial laboratory jointly established by Alcatel (now Alcatel-Lucent) and Thales in 2004 under the French “Economic Interest Group” (GIE) status.The purpose of ATL is to perform research on photonics and microelectronics components based onIII-V semiconductor materials (such as AsGa, InGaAs, InP, or GaN) from the basic studies to the transfer for industrialization, taking benefit from the synergies between the technologies developed for various markets addressed by Thales and Alcatel-Lucent, such as telecom, space, defence, safety and security.
 

Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications Heinrich Hertz Institut (FhG-HHI)

 

 

 

 

 

 

  Heinrich-Hertz-Institute (HHI) was founded in 1928 as the Heinrich Hertz Institute for Research on Oscillations. A vast experience is available on the design, fabrication and characterization of discrete and integrated optoelectronic/photonic components which made HHI to one of the leading laboratories worldwide on these topics. Devices developed successfully in the past comprise various types of laser diodes, ultrafast photodetectors and receivers comprising amplification, high-speed modulators, building blocks for all-optical signal processing, and THz transmitters/receivers. In addition, different monolithically integrated optoelectronic/photonic integrated circuits (OEIC/PIC) have been successfully fabricated (e.g. transceivers, photoreceivers, EML, THz generators/receivers, coherent and heterodyne receivers).
 

U2t Photonics AG (U2T)

 

 

 

 

 

 

  U2T is a Germany based SME with approx. 130 employees and its market orientation is clearly focused to address the ultra high-speed photonic components for optical communication systems. U2T Photonics AG (Berlin, Germany) was founded in January 1998 as a spin-off company of the HHI. Our core competence is the development of ultrafast optoelectronic components for fiber-optic applications such as communication super highways and microwave photonic systems, which require operation frequencies of 40 GHz and beyond. U2T has expert knowledge starting from device design and chip manufacturing to systems configurations and testing. Often based on the results of National or EU projects, leading edge optoelectronic components have been developed and introduced to the market. Examples are the high-speed waveguide integrated photodetectors with 50GHz bandwidth for test and measurement applications, photoreceivers for applications in 40 / 100 Gbit/s communication systems and a mode-locked laser source delivering 1.5 ps short pulses for OTDM experiments at bit rates up to 160 Gbit/s.

  The Poly-Grames Research Center has a long history of excellence in research and education of radio-frequency (RF), microwave, millimeter-wave and microwave photonics engineering. This is one of the largest and leading international academic research institutions in the field with three Canada Research Chairs (CRC) endowed by the Canadian government. This Center provides a dynamic research environment in connection with both fundamental and application-oriented projects. It also features interactive activities such as organizing microwave seminar series and multidisciplinary collaborations through joint research projects.

  Professor's Alex Gaeta's Group at Cornell University has a very active research activity in ultrafast nonlinear optics, all-optical processing, the development and application of photonic crystal fibers, nanophotonics, and quantum effects in nonlinear optics. This group has carried out the first demonstration of a CMOS-compatible monolithically integrated source, with important appications in high bandwidth integrated optical networks. In 2012, they collaborate with PHORMA to show the broadest supercontinuum generated on a CMOS-compatible chip to date, with potential applications in frequency metrology, optical coherence tomography, confocal imaging, and optical communications.

  The Photonics Research Group in the Department of Information Technology of Ghent University (and closely associated with IMEC), leaded by Roel Baets, is active in the field of photonic integration - more specifically silicon photonics - and its applications in information and communication technology, in sensing and in life sciences. This group puts its research focus on new concepts for photonic integrated devices and circuits and on the associated technologies and design methodologies. This includes passive and active waveguide-based photonic components, based on CMOS-compatible materials and processes as well as hybrid approaches combining silicon with other functional materials. The activities ‘center’ around the telecom wavelength of 1.55 micrometer but are expanding both to longer wavelengths (mid-IR) and shorter wavelengths (visible).

  The Silicon-based Micro and Nanophotonic Devices Group of the Université Paris-Sud, headed by Laurent Vivien, has as main research lines the study of passive (waveguide, splitters, 90° turns, optical couplers) and active (Si-based optical modulators and Ge on Si photodetectors) micro and nanophotonic devices on silicon for optical interconnects and optical fiber communications.

The optotoelectronics Research Ceter is one of the world's leading institutes for photonics research based at the University of Southampton. We work with Prof. Mashanovich's group, who was awarded a Royal Society Research Fellowhsip to work in Mid-Infrared Photonics in 2008.
